Welcome

Welcome to Room K1 for the 2009~ 2010 school year. I hope that it is filled with learning, laughter and lots of memories. I am excited to be teaching this year. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your families. I am sure that this year will be an engaging one.

This handbook was created to help you understand some of the activities, routines and norms that are a part of our classroom community. While I have tried to be as complete as possible there will no doubt be additions, deletions and corrections throughout the year. Also, if you have any questions at all donšt hesitate to make contact with me at your earliest convenience. The best way to contact me is email--kharris@smmusd.org. If you would prefer to leave a voice mail my extension is 127--which is my birthdate for those of you who are interested in numbers.

I would like to share a little information about me. This is my 20th year of teaching and my 10th year at Point Dume Marine Science School. I am married to Stacy Harris, a third grade teacher at Webster Elementary School. I have two children, Maya, 9 (a fourth-grader at Webster) and Devin 7 (a second-grader. I grew up in Malibu and went to Webster for kindergarten, first and second grades. I then transfered to the Santa Monica Alternative School House (SMASH), which my mom and few other parents started. I graduated from SMASH in 1983. I earned a B.A. in Pyschology (1988) as well as my teaching credential (1989) from UCSD. I began my teaching career working for the Los Angeles Unified School District at 52nd Street Elementary School. I taugh 2nd, 2/3 and 4/5 there before moving to the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District in 1992. I team taught a K-1-2 Multiage class for 8 years before transferering to PDMSS. During that time I earned my M.A. and my Administrative Credential from CSU. Since arriving at PDMSS I have earned my National Board Certification.

My interests outside of school include cooking, mostly Asian; computers, enjoying my iPhone;sports, any and all; woodworking, I always have a project going, and Karate, I am a 5th Gup in Tang Soo Do.

This handbook will be online and available to you throughout the year so please refer to it whenever you need to.
