Parent Games

Here are two quick and easy games you can play any time and any place. They are meant to help your child to enjoy letters and numbers and at the same time give them some tools to help them be successful in Kindergarten.

Quick Draw

Number of Players: 2 to 20

Rules: First, each player puts one hand behind their back. Second they put 0, 1 2, 3, 4, or 5 fingers out. On the count of three someone says Quick Draw. Each player displays his or her fingers and the first person to announce the correct sum is the winner of that round.

Alternative Game Options:

Find the Product: multiply numbers instead of adding them.

Odd/Even: have players choose odd or even prior to calling Quick Draw

Two Handed: use both hands to increase the level of difficulty

The Word Game

Number of Players: 2 to 20

Rules: A person says a word. The next person says a word that starts with the same ending sound as the prior personšs word. This repeats around as many times and for as long as the players are enjoying themselves. The only other rule is you canšt use the same word twice. For example, if Person A says CAT, then the next person might say TOP, and the person after that might say PIG, and then GOAT, and so on.

Alternative Game Options:

Silent E: have students use the last letter of the word, not the sound. This adds a spelling component.

Bonus Words: give extra points for words that start and end with the same sound

Reverse: when a word is used that starts/ends the same, then the direction of play changes
